Between Oban and Fort William, just south of Glencoe is the little village of Duror of Appin (shop, hotel), on the outskirts of which is Achara Lodge. This fine old house, dating back to 1840 stands in it own extensive grounds, laid to grass with mature trees and ornamental pools, with fine open views to the rear.

This is a truly lovely spot for a family holiday, with a sandy beach at nearby Cuil Bay, excellent walks in the immediate vicinity, though serious walkers, climbers and skiers in season will, no doubt, be heading straight for Glencoe! There is riding down the road at Lettershuna, where at low tide you can canter along the shore. Sailing, water ski-ing and boat hire are available locally and there is an attractive 9 hole golf course at Ballachulish (5m).

From Fort William (18m, all facilities, leisure centres etc.) take the West Highland Steam Railway - its viaduct is featured with the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter films - to Mallaig. Heading south, take cruises from Oban (30m) to Mull, Staffa and historic Iona.

All three properties are completely self contained, do not overlook each other and have ample parking space.

For a special treat when eating out, visit the award-winning Aird's Hotel or Pierhouse at Port Appin.

The main part of the house is on two levels, with a cosy sitting room with open fire, a dining area through the arch and a truly splendid conservatory at the back opening on to a terrace, so that the lovely views away to the Morvern hills can be enjoyed in all weathers. There is a further sitting room with double bed settee, and shower room alongside, and upstairs, double and twin bedrooms and a dramatically decorated bathroom!

Downstairs:

• Kitchen with fridge-freezer, cooker, microwave, washer-drier, dishwasher, etc.

Linnhe at Achara Lodge (sleeps 2/4)

Linnhe is a completely self-contained ground floor apartment, with its own front door. Inside it is charming and full of character with an extensive living area with fine stone fireplace and double bed-settee, a galley kitchen, twin bedroom (can be converted to double on request) and bathroom. There is a phone for incoming calls.

Downstairs:

• Sitting/Dining room with double bed settee, TV/VCR/DVD, mini hi-fi.
• Kitchen with cooker, fridge, washer-drier, microwave, etc.

This clever, completely self-contained, first floor conversion is accessed by an external stairway and is spacious and full of character, with beamed and coombed ceilings, a superb open plan living area with double sofa bed, twin bedroom which can convert to a double, and bathroom. There is a phone for incoming calls.

First floor:
