Achleanan Farmhouse
Near Lochaline
Argyll

Sleeping 6

You could be forgiven for believing you were the only people on earth until you look out at the lights of Tobermory shining at you across the Sound of Mull in the evening! Achleanan Farmhouse, 500 feet above the Sound, has dramatic views to the far Atlantic beyond the mountains of Mull. The house is set in the midst of grazing land and moor, home to Scottish Blackface sheep, Galloway and Highland cattle, and deer, both red and roe. Flax for linen was once produced here and memory of it lingers in the old stone flax tank standing to this day behind the cottage.

Sunset

800 yards from the nearest habitation and set in the 5000 acres of the private Drimnin Estate, Achleanan has the most peaceful of locations. The Estate has eight miles of coastline to which guests have access, as well as to moors, valleys and native woodland. For those more interested in human activity there are the ruins of a Victorian chapel, a Stone Age fort and a walled crofting village.

Keen eyes will observe golden and sea eagles, pine martens and otters on the Estate. A good variety of walks are also available here : over hills, along the coast, over the private track to the old ferry inn on Loch Sunart. On Mondays and Fridays a passenger ferry runs from Drimnin pier to Tobermory where there is shopping and the opportunity to view the setting of the Balamory television series. Another ferry sails, daily, between Lochaline (11 miles, hotel and restaurant) and Fishnish on Mull. This ferry is more convenient for visiting the south of Mull and Iona. Booking is not necessary.

View of the loch

Renovated to a very high standard, Achleanan Farmhouse remains a traditional stone-walled house with the added attraction of a sunroom/dining room boasting spectacular views over the surrounding landscape. The snug, pine-panelled sitting room has a wood burning stove. A modern kitchen, three comfortable bedrooms and two bathrooms complete the accommodation. The house is as comfortable in winter as in other seasons thanks to double glazing, central heating and the wood-burning stove. Local meat ( beef, lamb and wild venison) reared on the Drimnin Estate can be ordered for your arrival, subject to season.

Bed linen and towels, oil fired central heating and electricity are all included!included. Pets are usually welcome by arrangement. Sorry, no smoking is allowed in the Cottage.
