The Lodge, Auch Estate
The Lodge on the Auch Estate closely resembles the picture-postcard ideal of a shooting lodge with its whitewashed walls and traditional architecture, elegant yet inviting. Some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in the west of Scotland is to be found on this 31,000 acre Highland Estate. Lying between Ben Dorain and Beinn Chaorach the estate is centred on the majestic glen which runs north from Tyndrum towards Rannoch Moor and Glencoe.
The glen is traversed by the West Highland Way which, in fact, passes within a few hundred yards of its cottages. You can fish for trout on the river Orchy and in Loch Lyon and shooting and stalking in season can be arranged. This is paradise for walkers, climbers and sportsmen but there is an abundance of wildlife to delight those whose pleasures are less strenuous and who wish to savour the peace and solitude of these magnificent surroundings.
Even railway enthusiasts are catered for in this wild and isolated landscape as two imposing viaducts are within sight of the Lodge, viaducts very similar to the one filmed at Glenfinnan with the Hogwarts Express!
At the front of the Lodge a sweeping drive swings through woodlands and large areas of lawn up to the door. Inside, a gracious central hall leads to a very well-equipped kitchen/breakfast/morning room, an imposing but welcoming Jacobean dining room and a beautifully cosy sitting room with comfortable sofas and an open fire where you can unwind and talk over the day's events. Upstairs, all six bedrooms are equipped with washbasins, one of the three double bedrooms is en suite and there are two more bathrooms. Oil fired central heating ensures the warmth and comfort of all.
Lying only half a mile off the main A82 trunk road, the Lodge is centrally placed for further exploration. Glencoe is just over 16 miles to the north west, while Oban and Fort William are both 40 miles away. From Oban there are boat trips available to Iona, Staffa, Mull and other islands. From Fort William there is the Road to the Isles, or, alternatively you can abandon the car and take the train from Tyndrum to Fort William, change there to the steam train to Mallaig which actually crosses the famous viaducts mentioned above.
Going south you only have to drive 17 miles to reach the northern end of Loch Lomond with its famous golf courses, boating and sailing. From here you can easily reach The Trossachs, Loch Katrine and even Glasgow.
Tyndrum has the nearest shops, hotels, garage etc. There is also a hotel at Bridge of Orchy.
