Craigmore Cottage
Carradale
Mull of Kintyre
Scotland
Sleeping 6
There are those who have such happy memories of idyllic holidays in Carradale that they have named their houses after it! This delightful village, just 12 miles north of Campbeltown on the east coast of the Mull of Kintyre, clusters round its picturesque harbour. Just a few hundred yards from the harbour and on the hill above, with lovely views over the bay from windows and garden towards Arran, stands Craigmore, a traditional, detached villa which, now refurbished, provides spacious, comfortable and versatile accommodation for a relaxing family holiday.
Craigmore has plenty of room for family members to spread throughout the house. Not only are there two sizeable sitting rooms, both with open fires, but there is a further sunroom/porch at the back door. The garden is enclosed, so children can play in safety, though the road beyond, ending as it does at the harbour, is hardly overloaded with traffic!
The winding, single track road that brings you down from Tarbert (24m) affords wonderful views across the Kilbranan Sound to Arran. The village has a PO, general store with bakery, three eating places, hotel, and a further restaurant just outside it, so a short stroll from the house will care for most of your day-to-day needs while nearby Campeltown has all facilities.
There is a mile-long sandy beach just below the village with good waves for surfing with further beaches at Torrisdale and Saddel. There is also a 9 hole golf course, where every hole overlooks Carradale Bay. Riding is available locally, with stables at Waterfoot and Penninver (3m). Inland there is plenty of scope for walking in the hills of Kintyre. The shore line beneath the cottage is pebbly with some sand, and you can walk on along there, facing Arran, to discover some beautiful inlets, where children will enjoy scrambling over the rocks. At teatime, you may see seals coming into the harbour with the fishing boats, eager for scraps. Perhaps you begin to see why people love this place!
It is also well worth exploring the end of the peninsula, south from Campbeltown towards Southend, for example, or west to Machrihanish (18m), where not only is there an excellent golf course, but a magnificent beach popular with canoeists and wind surfers.
This part of the world, too, is well endowed with ferries. During the summer (to the end of October), there is a service from Claonaig, just up the coast, across to Lochranza on Arran. From Tarbert too you can cross to Portavadie, (no booking necessary) and explore the Kyles of Bute. From the other side of the peninsula, a service operates from Tayinloan across to the island of Gigha, famous for its Achamore gardens.
Chances are, however, you will be quite content to relax in the comfortable surroundings at Craigmore and adapt to the unhurried pace of life in the area. Exactly what you need to recharge the batteries and send you back refreshed and invigorated to the daily grind!
Heating is by electricity (
included). Bed linen and towels may be hired. Sorry, no pets and smoking is not permitted in the house.
