Dun Caan is a charming 'picture-postcard' traditional terraced cottage set in a quiet location just outside the village of Kirkmichael which lies between Blairgowrie and Pitlochry in the Strathardle valley in north Perthshire. A gentle stroll over a quaint hump-backed bridge brings you to the award-winning village shop and no less than three good restaurants.
The cottage garden, most attractive, sunny and enclosed with patio and furniture, is laid out on the opposite side of the little farm road from the house and has secure storage for cycles or other sporting gear. Inside the cottage all is snug and cosy. Downstairs, there is an inviting living area with a wood burner to enhance the electric heating as well as a well-appointed kitchen. Upstairs, the accommodation of a double bedroom and bathroom is perfect for two although the extra single bed in the bedroom would enable it to be an equally comfortable family room. The owners have provided videos, DVDs, games and a large selection of books, all designed to ensure a thoroughly enjoyable stay.
However, you will want to be outside in this beautiful part of the world with all there is to see and do here. The cottage sits right on the Cateran Trail, which offers great tramping in the local hills, while for climbers Ben Vrackie is just along the road to Pitlochry.
The little town of Pitlochry (13m) is nearly always bustling with tourists come to visit its Theatre in the Hills and its fish ladder. It stands at the gateway to the majestic Lochs Tummel and Rannoch amid some of the most stunning scenery in the country. Sporting enthusiasts will find water sports, riding, cycling and fishing are all available locally while at Blairgowrie (12m) there is a leisure centre as well as the famous Rosemount golf course, only one among many good local courses.
If you take the road from Kirkmichael up over the hill to Glenshee and its well-known ski slopes (in season) you can continue on to reach Braemar on Royal Deeside in less than an hour. Going south, you can enjoy day trips to Perth, Fife and Edinburgh itself. Glamis Castle, birthplace of the late Queen Mother, lies south east of the cottage and here, too, at Carnoustie is the coast and Lunan Bay's fine sandy beach.
Bed linen, towels and electricity are all included in the rental. Up to two well behaved pets are welcome by arrangement. Smoking is not permitted in the cottage.
