Gran's Cottage

Gran's Cottage (sleeps 4)

Arran is one of the most popular and most easily accessible of Scotland's islands. It is also one of the most attractive, offering good walking, good beaches, good golf and a host of other activities in a very compact and beautiful area.

There, just two miles from the ferry terminal at Brodick (shops, hotels, all facilities), the 'capital' of the island, Gran's Cottage is a traditional little whitewashed stone cottage which sits in its own large and secluded garden on the threshold of magnificent Glen Rosa. It dates from around 1750, but its original inhabitants would scarcely recognise it now, so beautifully has it been renovated and refurbished to offer everything in the way of 21st century comfort.

Gran's Cottage The kitchen is magnificently equipped, down to a cappuccino machine and a bread maker; it also has a seating area from where you can watch the abundant wildlife which frequents the garden. The sitting room is cosy and comfortable. Upstairs there are two quaint, pine-clad double bedrooms and the bathroom boasts a Jacuzzi bath, where you can soothe away the strains of an over-energetic day.

The whole cottage is full of thoughtful little touches provided by the owners to ensure that your stay here is a truly unforgettable one.

Gran's Cottage From the door, you can set off on foot up the lovely Glen, (where you may be lucky enough to spot a golden eagle), accept the challenge of Goat Fell, the highest point on the island which dominates the whole landscape, or just have a quiet stroll through the policies of nearby Brodick Castle.

There are many excellent golf courses on the island, a couple of swimming pools at local hotels which are open to visitors, pony trekking, paragliding or quad biking, so those with plenty of energy are very well provided for. For those, on the other hand, who simply want to relax and recharge their batteries, you could hardly imagine a more peaceful and lovely spot to do just that.

Reaper Weary

Reaper Weary (sleeps 4)
Glen Rosa

Why Reaper Weary? The phrase comes from Tennyson's famous poem, 'The Lady of Shalott', but a weary reaper would think he had died and gone to heaven on coming to this sublimely comfortable and beautifully situated cottage on the lovely Island of Arran!

The cottage is a conversion of an old stable block at Glen Rosa Farm, created out of what was once the byre, stable, barn and threshing mill for the present farmhouse. All on one level, it stands in its own large private garden, and both of the bedrooms and the sitting room have French doors leading out to a wild flower garden and orchard with furniture.

Reaper Weary It is luxuriously appointed throughout and there are two bathrooms, one ensuite, which between them have a whirlpool bath and power shower.

Glen Rosa, while just a couple of miles from Brodick, the main village of the island (all facilities) is a site of special scientific interest and a prime example of a glacial valley, where there is wonderful scenery, rare flora and fauna - you may be lucky enough to spot a golden eagle - picnic spots, and access too to Goat Fell, Arran's dominating peak.

Apart from the wonderful walking, whether up the Glen, on the mountain or simply strolling through the policies of nearby Brodick Castle, the island offers beautiful beaches, pony trekking, excellent golf courses, tennis, fishing and even paragliding and quad biking. One of the Brodick hotels has a leisure centre with pool which is open to visitors.

The cottage has electric central heating. Electricity, bed linen and towels are all included!included. Well-behaved pets are welcome by arrangement. Groceries may be ordered in advance. Sorry, no smokers. Payphone.
