Those who remember the delightful film 'Local Hero' will be intrigued to know that parts of it were shot in Pennan (shop, inn) on the Moray coast of north eastern Scotland. The famous telephone box (still a place of pilgrimage for visitors!) is just along the seafront from Haven Cottage, a pretty, detached whitewashed hideaway for two people, which has wonderful views of the sea in all its moods from both sitting room and bedroom windows.

Outside, there is a verandah with a small private walled garden (furniture). Inside, the sitting room has a pretty Victorian fireplace, and oil central heating further ensures its cosiness.

While fishing trips can be arranged, only a couple of commercial fishing boats now work out of the harbour at the east end of Pennan, and it is mainly populated by leisure craft. You come down to the village, sandwiched between the cliff and the sea, by a steep, narrow road, which merges with the main street at a tight junction. There is nowhere else to go, and this quietness and peace is an integral part of Pennan's charm.

Once you have ascended the cliff out of the village, however, you can soon find golf and surfing along the coast, plus other little villages to visit, sandy beaches beyond Banff (12m, all facilities) and at Cullen Bay (25m). This coast is reckoned to have the highest number of sunshine hours in Britain, so it's a good bet weather-wise. Inland, you are not far from whisky country with a host of distilleries which welcome visitors.

Bed-linen and towels are included. Electricity and CH are included. One well behaved dog is welcome. No smoking within the cottage.
