Hope Park West
Coldstream
Berwickshire
Scotland
Sleeping 6 (7), bedrooms 4
Hope Park West is situated a short walk from the centre of the quiet Borders town of Coldstream (shops, restaurants, pubs). A delightful, traditional, stone-built listed property, it has a sheltered garden surrounded by trees and stands at the end of a private drive.
The enclosed garden is a safe place for children to play freely on the lawns while adults can relax on the patio. Inside, the centrally-heated accommodation is comfortable and well-appointed. The spacious, light sitting room has a view over both the front garden and the courtyard (parking) at the back. There are bedrooms to suit every type of group whether for family or friends with one twin, one double and two single bedrooms (as well as bathroom and separate shower room).
Coldstream is probably most famous for having given its name to the Coldstream Guards (there is a museum in the town). It is the most easterly of the inland Border towns and practically straddles the Border, being right on the river Tweed (first class fishing).
It is very easy to reach the town from the main A1 trunk road and by using a fast cross-country route you can be in Edinburgh (42m) in little more than an hour. The east coast is also very near with splendid beaches at Coldingham (25m), historic Bamburgh (26m) and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne with its medieval castle and Priory (25m) all at hand. The small fishing village of St Abbs is home to a spectacular cliff-top NT Reserve where you can enjoy a dramatic walk to admire the huge colonies of seabirds. St Abbs is also a well-known diving centre; in fact, it is supposed to be one of the best cold-water diving sites in Europe.
Should golfing be your preferred sport there are first-rate championship courses around Dunbar (33m) not to mention many very good and less expensive 9 hole courses in the area. For keen riders there are stables at Kimmerston near Millfield. On the outskirts of Coldstream there are beautiful gardens at The Hirsel Country Park, the seat of the Douglas-Homes.
Hope Park West is very centrally located for exploring the Borders region with its dramatic history, its stately homes, castles and abbeys. This luminous and peaceful countryside is perfect for walking and cycling. Kelso (9m) is a delightful little town (shops, pubs, restaurants, Floors Castle, swimming pool, ice rink and racecourse) and from there it is only a short drive to the string of small Border towns of Jedburgh, Melrose, Selkirk and Peebles, each with its own individual character. A few miles to the south of Coldstream lies the Northumberland National Park where there are many opportunities for walking, picnics, watching wildlife etc.
