Nr Newton Stewart
Kirroughtree Cottage is a very smart and beautifully appointed holiday cottage which stands on a quiet country lane just a mile from the pretty town of Newton Stewart in Bonnie Galloway. It is surrounded by farmland with some well maintained but little-used farm buildings behind. The name will be familiar to mountain bikers, for the cottage is only four miles from the famous Kirroughtree Trail. Winner of the MBR Trail of the Year in 2010, Kirroughtree is also a favourite family venue with a wide range of trails, seasonal café and a great children's play area.
But back to the cottage... extensive gravelled spaces round about offer plenty of parking, and from the kitchen doors open to a secluded and suntrap grass garden (furniture) which is completely enclosed. There is a shed with secure storage for bikes etc. and, directly behind, guests have access to an enormous, empty, open barn where children can play (just perfect for impromptu games of football!)
The situation is a very peaceful one, but it is the house itself which is the star, having been carefully designed for the owners' own eventual retirement. You will probably enter from the utility room, handy for storing muddy boots etc, into the huge, ultra-modern, dining kitchen, very well equipped and furnished. The spacious sitting room is light and bright, with windows on three sides. Of the three bedrooms, one has an en suite shower, the other an en suite WC, and there is another very elegant bathroom.
Newton Stewart is an attractive town with excellent facilities (cinema, swimming pool) and is on the edge of the Galloway Forest Park, which in addition to Kirroughtree, offers some of the best mountain biking trails in the country. There is a riding school within a half-mile of the property (the horses graze just over the fence) and the area also offers good walking, golf, water sports and fishing.
Lovers of wildlife will appreciate the 24 mile Galloway Kite Trail where you can almost always spot some of these magnificent birds, recently reintroduced into this part of the world. You can cover the trail by car, cycle or on foot. There is another RSPB Reserve at the Wood of Cree. The area has also been designated at Scotland's first Sky Park, one of the best places in the country to see the sky at night.
Children will be delighted by the Coco Bean chocolate factory at Twynholm (22m), where they can make their own chocolate, and the Cream of Galloway, where you can see ice cream being made and where there is also an adventure playground.
Luce Bay offers lovely beaches, and there are several fine gardens to visit. The Rhinns of Galloway and The Machars are two other scenic areas which should not be missed. At Kirroughtree Cottage there is plenty to enjoy, whatever your taste in holiday activities.
Stranraer is 30 minutes distant by car and has a leisure centre. It (or nearby Cairnryan) is where you would take ship if you fancied a day trip to Ireland.
Bed linen, towels, the first £20 of electricity and the first £20 of oil CH are included. Wi-fi is available, subject to provider. Two well-behaved pets welcome by arrangement. Sorry, no smoking in the cottage
