Ladhopemuir Cottage
Nr Melrose
Scottish Borders
Sleeping 6
In a commanding and south-facing position, with panoramic views over the surrounding countryside to the legendary Eildon Hills, Ladhopemuir Cottage is the perfect cottage for a family holiday! It is quite on its own, accessed by a quiet single track road, and stands in its own fenced and walled garden (furniture), ideal for both children and pets, which is regularly visited by pheasants, rabbits and deer.
The house is modern, warm (with oil central heating and multi-fuel stove in the sitting room) and well appointed, providing versatile accommodation for up to six people and with big picture windows to make the most of the lovely views. Despite being so secluded, you are very much at the heart of things here. In one direction there is Melrose (5m), with its ruined Abbey and excellent places to shop and eat, fishing in the Tweed, riverside walks etc. In the other there is Lauder (6m), with Thirlestane Castle and more pubs and shops, on the fast A68 which will have you in Edinburgh in under an hour. The Southern Upland Way passes quite close to the cottage, so there is excellent walking in the surrounding hills. The nearest golf course is at Lauder, but you are really spoiled for choice when it comes to pounding the fairways. There is riding at Earlston (14 miles), kayaking in the Tweed, you are within easy reach of the superb mountain biking trails at Cardrona, and in fact the area caters for just about every sporting pursuit you could think of.
With regard to sightseeing, there are stately homes, castles and peel towers aplenty in the surrounding area. The little Border towns all have their own unique character. Galashiels, the nearest (5m), has all facilities including cinema and swimming pool. You are also within an hour's drive of the coast, with an excellent sandy beach at Coldingham and the magnificent cliffs and RSPB seabird reserve at St Abbs.
There is parking for several vehicles at the door. Oil-fired central heating, (run by an Aga for which the owners have thoughtfully provided video instructions), fuel for the stove, bed linen and towels are all
included. The house has a telephone. Up to two well-behaved pets are welcome by arrangement. Smoking is not permitted within the house.
Please note that the bunk beds have a low guard rail and are not insured for children under 6. Young children therefore MUST sleep in the twin beds.
