Rose Cottage is a newly-renovated old stone cottage between Melrose (5 miles) and Jedburgh (12 miles) in the central Scottish Border Country. It makes up the front corner portion of a former early-Victorian coach-house which stands within the private grounds of the mansionhouse (out of view) to which it belongs.
Inside, it is both cosy and comfortable. The attractive sitting room has an open fire, and there is a separate dining room. The kitchen, while simple, has all the necessities, and upstairs there are two roomy bedrooms and a bathroom. It retains decorative Victorian fireplaces upstairs, and the original shutters on the large windows downstairs which face onto its own area of grass garden (furniture) and the trees bordering the shallow River Ale. There are two other cottages behind it - facing out the other way - and it is in a quiet and private setting accessed by a private road. The village of Lilliesleaf, which has two pubs, is within strolling distance of the cottage.
The bonny Border town of Melrose, with its ruined abbey and excellent shops and restaurants, is 6 miles away over the shoulder of the famous Eildon hills, while in the other direction both Hawick and Selkirk with their woollen mills and factory outlets are within a short drive. The nearest golf courses are at Melrose, St Boswells and the Woll, and visitors are welcome at all of them. Melrose has tennis courts, Selkirk and Hawick have swimming pools and the world class mountain biking trails at Glentress are only 16 miles away. For walkers, The Southern Upland Way can be joined near Galashiels, and St Cuthbert's Way at Melrose.
Further afield, one hour's drive will bring you either to Edinburgh or the Berwick and Northumberland Coasts with their lovely sandy beaches.
Heating is by night storage and open-fire. Bed-linen and towels and the first £15 of electricity are
