Dorlin Cottage (sleeps 6)

Of the five cottages scattered across the Lochshiel Estate near Acharacle, 45 miles from Fort William on the west coast of Scotland, Dorlin Cottage has arguably the most spectacular view, looking over the beach to iconic Castle Tioram in the bay.

A most attractive, detached, double-glazed stone house, it stands in its own large garden grounds (furniture), just a stone's throw from the shore. Inside it has been beautifully furnished in a pleasing, classical style to complement its traditional character. The huge, flagstoned dining kitchen has all modern appliances while long lazy evenings may be enjoyed in front of the open fire in the snug and elegant sitting room. Also downstairs is a shower room; while upstairs are three good-sized bedrooms with coombed ceilings and a bathroom.

Just to add more local colour, deer frequently visit to the areas around the house and the whole area abounds in wildlife. The Estate and the area in general offer endless opportunities for walking, while children will play happily for hours on the numerous quiet beaches. Acharacle (2m) has shops and a hotel, and from there you can explore the Ardnamurchan peninsula, perhaps taking the ferry across to Mull, or head up to Arisaig and Morar for more silver sands, the golf course at Traigh, or a trip to Skye via the ferry from Mallaig.

Heating is by electricity (first £25 included!included). Bed linen and towels available for hire by overseas guests only. Two pets welcome by arrangement. No smoking in the cottage. Water is from a private source. There is a storage building and separate parking area adjoining the cottage to which the Estate may occasionally require right of access.

Camus Dorche Camus Dorche setting

Camus Dorche (sleeps 10)

Some 45 miles west of Fort William, Camus Dorche is a relatively modern house built in traditional Scottish style which occupies a commanding position above the Shiel River and the Estate fishing pools.

For obvious reasons the house is particularly popular with those who come to shoot and fish, but will appeal to everyone who would enjoy relaxing in such comfortable Highland surroundings. Most of the ground floor is given over to a huge open plan living area with various sitting areas and a wood burner. On this level also is a double bedroom with en suite bathroom. Upstairs are three further bedrooms, a double (en suite), a twin and one with four full-size bunk beds which children will doubtless adore, and a further bathroom.

With a drying room and separate utility area, the house is ideal for families who relish the outdoor life and an active holiday. Guests have access to splendid walks on the estate land, looking out for the abundant wildlife in the area. Loch fishing can be arranged locally. There are also several sandy beaches to enjoy, the nearest about 2 miles from the cottage. Acharacle (2m) offers shops and eating places while day trips via the ferries to Skye from Mallaig and Mull from Kilchoan are only two of a host of possibilities in this wonderful corner of Scotland.

Heating is by electricity (first £25 included!included). Bed linen and towels available for hire to overseas guests only. Two pets welcome by arrangement. No smoking in the cottage. Wi-fi available, subject to provider.

Scarduish Scarduish setting Scarduish outlook

Scarduish (sleeps 6)

Scarduish, fabulously situated on the shores of Loch Moidart near Acharacle on Scotland's west coast, is the most deceptive of houses, its simple, brightly painted, boarded exterior belying the spacious comfort to be found within.

On the private Lochshiel Estate, with the sea loch at the end of its own drive and lovely views from its large front windows, it has been furnished and appointed to a very high standard. The large, bright, open plan living area has a big modern kitchen and a most comfortable sitting and dining area, with a wood burner as a welcoming focal point (if you can drag yourself away from the views, that is.) Then there are three airy bedrooms (one en suite), a utility room and a family bathroom - really all you could want!

The cottage stands in its own extensive grounds, with a terrace area (furniture). Bring your binoculars, for you are likely to see a wonderful array of wildlife here, from seals and otters to deer and pine martens in the woods and buzzards and even eagles in the sky above. A short walk will bring you to the sandy beaches of Dorlin Bay, with the romantic ruin of Castle Tioram. Nearby Acharacle offers shops and a hotel, and from here you can strike out in all directions to explore the wonderful scenery of this most beautiful area of Scotland.

Heating is by electricity (first £20 included!included). Bed linen and towels for hire by overseas guests only. One pet welcome by arrangement. Sorry, no smoking in the cottage. Water is from a private source. Wi-fi available, subject to provider.

Gardener's Cottage Gardener's Cottage

Gardener's Cottage (sleeps 4)

Some 45 miles west of Fort William, as the wee road from Acharacle (4m) to Dorlin winds down the hill to its end at the shore, you come to Gardener's Cottage, standing in its grass garden sheltered by trees behind, with, to the front, a fabulous view of Castle Tioram on an island in the bay (photo, below right).

On the 9,000 acre Lochshiel Estate, in some of the most glorious coastal and mountain scenery on Scotland's west coast, this detached Victorian dwelling has now been charmingly refurbished to a very high standard, and offers warm and extremely comfortable accommodation which cannot fail to please.  The cosy sitting room with wood burner is linked to the spacious dining room by a smart, modern kitchen, a most practical and attractive arrangement.  The elegant wood flooring testifies again to the quality of the accommodation and the cottage is double glazed and well insulated throughout.

On the upper level are two excellent bedrooms, a double and a twin, and a new and spacious bathroom.

In such a setting, you may expect to see a wonderful array of wildlife, and will not be disappointed.  Otters, seals, deer, osprey, buzzards and eagles all make this area their home.  There are many enjoyable hill and coastal walks to be enjoyed and sandy beaches ideal for children to play.  Trout fishing on the estate is available by arrangement.

If all this is still not enough, the whole Ardnamurchan peninsula awaits your exploration.  To the north you can join the Road to the Isles for the silver sands of Morar, the idyllic golf course at Traigh, or to take the ferry from Mallaig (35m) across to Skye.  To the south, turn right at Salen to Kilchoan (24m), from where you can cross to Mull for the day, and yet another legendary beach at Sanna.

For practicalities, the nearest supermarkets of any size are at Fort William.  Acharacle however, has an excellent general store, bakers, Post Office etc and for eating out, there are hotels both there and at Salen just 4 miles or so further down the road.  Water is from a private source.  Wifi available, subject to provider.

Heating is by electricity (£20 included!included). Bed linen and towels available for hire by overseas guests only. Two dogs welcome by arrangement. No smoking in the cottage. Water is from a private source. Wi-fi available, subject to provider.

Mary Ann's Cottage (sleeps 2)

In an idyllic situation on the Lochshiel Estate near Acharacle on the lovely west coast of Scotland Mary Ann's cottage is a traditional, whitewashed, Highland cottage and a real romantic hideaway.

Reached by a private estate road, it overlooks the water where the River Shiel flows out to the sea, with woodland behind. The cottage has been double-glazed and beautifully renovated with no sacrifice of its traditional character. The living area is open plan, with a panelled, vaulted ceiling, stripped wood flooring and a wood burner for added cosiness and ambience, while the panelled double bedroom has an exposed stone hearth which, while not in use, is a charming feature.

The estate coastline offers many fine walks and sandy bays to enjoy. Castle Tioram, familiar from many calendars, is just a short distance away. Acharacle offers shops and eating places, and from there you can tour to north and south; north to the Road to the Isles, Arisaig and Morar, golf at Traigh, or a ferry hop over to Skye from Mallaig; south to Ardnamurchan, yet more glorious scenery and another ferry hop from Kilchoan to Tobermory on Mull.
