Macgregor Cottage,
Ord,
Isle of Skye
Sleeping 6
Macgregor Cottage is one of a very small settlement of white pebble-dashed cottages at Ord on a south-west corner of Skye bordering Loch Eishort. It is easily reached from the mainland either via the 45-minute car-ferry crossing from Mallaig (at the end of The Road to the Isles) to Armadale, or by road from the Skye Bridge, and finally by a single-track road with passing-places. Sheep are everywhere on the grassy/rocky hillocks, and the views all around are amazing. The cottage is wood-lined throughout, comfortably furnished (the bedrooms are small), well-heated with good insulation and triple-glazed; so suitable for all times of the year, and it has large windows in the open-plan sitting/dining/kitchen - as well as garden furniture and a good stretch of sandy beach a 3 minute walk from the cottage - from which you can enjoy one of the very best views across the loch of The Cuillin Mountains (spectacular at all times of the year) on the whole Island of Skye. There is a jetty from which to launch boats (at your own risk) and seals and otters can often be glimpsed from it.
There is a hotel at Isle Ornsay has a good bar and a restaurant and at Ardvarsar there is another, plus a small general store. The nearest shops of any size on the island are at Broadford about 15 miles away.
Please note that the water at Ord can be peaty (quite safe - excellent with whisky) but visitors might prefer to bring bottled water.
Heating is by electric night-store heaters (£10 electricity
included). Bed-linen is
included and towels are available for hire. Pets are welcome but under very strict control. No smoking is allowed within the cottage. The cottage has a payphone.
