Of all the Scottish islands, Skye must surely the best-known and most beloved and one of the most evocative spots on the whole island must surely be Dunvegan, on the west coast of the island, ancestral home of the clan MacLeod with its castle and celebrated Fairy Flag.

Orbost House is only four miles from Dunvegan (shops, hotel). This is an impressive 18th century country house set in the middle of three acres of gardens and with breathtaking views over the ocean to the island of Rhum. The West Wing of the house has been adapted and changed into two generously-sized holiday apartments. We offer the first floor flat which is ideally placed to capture the magnificent views of ocean and mountains. The apartment has been refurbished and is now a bright, cheerful and welcoming holiday home, accessed from the main courtyard which provides plenty of parking.

Just a short walk away along a peaceful farm track you will reach a sandy beach where rock pools will keep children happily intrigued for hours. MacLeod's Maidens are stacks of rock rearing up from the sea and within walking distance of the cottage. Nearby, too, are MacLeod's Tables, high flat-topped hills which may tempt hill walkers, although serious climbers will always be attracted to the grandeur of the Cuillins. Less strenuous forms of exercise are also to be found in the area – pony trekking, boat trips to observe the basking seals or to admire the scenery of the nearby Duirinish and Waternish peninsulae.

The 'capital' of Skye is Portree (all facilities) 20 miles away. There are, however, eating places closer to home: The Three Chimneys is highly renowned and a short distance away, while the Stein Inn and the Lochbay Seafood restaurant both offer good food at more affordable prices.

Heating is by electric storage heaters (£20 included). Bed-linen and towels are included. Sorry, no pets.
