The Missionary's House
Isle of Skye
The Missionary's House is situated in the small crofting community of Fasach in Glendale on the Duirinish peninsula, seven miles from Dunvegan, on the west coast of Skye. (Gourmets will be pleased to learn that the world renowned restaurant 'The Three Chimneys' is only a short distance from the house.)
Perched high above the road and standing in its own 6 acres of land, the house has superb views over the whole of the Glendale valley to Loch Pooltiel and the Outer Hebrides beyond. It is particularly well placed for enjoying to the maximum the fabulous Hebridean sunsets which can be viewed either from the garden(furniture) around the house or from the cosy interior.
Inside, the owners have completely refurbished and re-equipped the cottage to a very high standard. In the sitting room a whitewashed stone wall has been retained, the floors are stripped wood, and a wood-burning stove keeps the atmosphere cosy. There is a separate dining room with an open fire and a second small sitting room also with a wood-burning stove.
During the Highland Clearances this particular area, the Duirinish peninsula, was practically emptied of its population. Today, it has become a popular destination for walkers. Although you are a 40 minute drive away from the Cuillins you can reach MacLeod's Tables from the very door of the Missionary's House. To the southeast there is the highest cliff walk in Britain leading to Neist Point. Along this path you have a grand opportunity of spotting whales and different bird varieties. There
The district boasts several small museums, among them the MacCrimmon Piping Heritage Centre at Borreraig.
As for dining out, from Easter onwards there are several very good restaurants in the surrounding area as well as the superb Three Chimneys. The village of Glendale has a small licensed restaurant, a post office and a general store which stocks most food items.
Local attractions include the Coral beaches about 9 miles away and Dunvegan Castle which is particularly popular with tourists. The 'capital'of Skye, Portree, is 25 miles away.
