Parliament House

Parliament House,
Reiff
Near Achiltibuie

Sleeping 12

The name may evoke Westminster but the reality is as different as ever could be. This Parliament House derives its name from a nearby rock where the village elders were reputed to meet to discuss matters relating to the community. Standing in front of its own pebble beach near Achiltibuie in Wester Ross, it looks out to the Summer Isles, northern Skye and the Outer Hebrides on the fabulous north-west coast of Scotland.

House from the sea

Facing south, this large modern house is located at the western end of the little village of Reiff just where the single-track road ends. The scattered community of Rieff is 6 miles from Achiltibuie (shop, petrol, well-known Summer Isles Hotel) and only a few miles from such famous Scottish mountains as Coigeach and Stac Pollaidh.

The house itself is as comfortable as its setting is magnificent. Equipped with all the comforts of the 21st century it has a fantastic sun/room dining room, an enormous kitchen with a family/play area, a comfortable sitting room, six bedrooms and three bathrooms, one en suite. Outside, there is a decked area for sitting (furniture) and a dry stane dyke forms the boundary of the grassy garden in traditional style. Beyond the garden the shore with its rocks and some sand (at low tide) is a perfect playground for children and will keep them happy for hours. If the weather turns rainy there is also table tennis in the garage.

View

This is ideal holiday country: sea, mountains and plenty of opportunities for walks along the coast or in the hills (if the higher summits are too daunting a challenge). The Reiff cliffs, relatively famous in their own right for rock-climbing (mostly single-pitch climbs), appeal to novices and experienced climbers alike.

You must definitely try the 'wee mad road' over to Lochinver as the scenery is quite spectacular and your camera will never be in its case. On the way you can stop to admire the Kirkaig Falls and even venture up Suilven if you feel the need to expend some energy. If you are of a less active mind treat yourself to a coffee and enjoy a browse in the wonderful bookshop there in the middle of nowhere.

Shoreline

Polbain (4m) has a pub and the Summer Isles Hotel has an international reputation offering first class meals either at the bar (all year) or in its award-winning restaurant (closed in winter). For more serious shopping Ullapool is about an hour's drive away. From here ferries are available to Stornoway on the island of Lewis.

Bed linen, electricity and the first £20 of oil central heating are included!included in the rental. Towels may be hired. Two well-behaved pets are welcome by arrangement, but should be kept downstairs. Smoking is not permitted within the property.
