Reull a Choin
This wholly enchanting little cottage is a few miles from Kilchoan on the Ardnamurchan peninsula on the way to the lighthouse which is the westernmost point of mainland Britain.
Behind the cottage (the name means Sirius, the Dog Star) is a beautifully designed garden with a decked seating area overlooking a water cascade, with fine views of the surrounding hills. Doors open to it from the open-plan living area, which is bright, spacious and comfortable, with a solid fuel stove. A broad spiral staircase leads up to a light and airy galleried bedroom. With only two other houses close by it is also remarkably private.
Ardnamurchan offers a real escapists' heaven, with superb walking, cycling on the quiet roads and an abundance of wildlife. At the RSPB reserve back along the coast at Glenborrodale you may see golden and white-tailed eagles, merlins and redstarts, to name but some. There is an idyllic white beach just half a mile or so from the cottage at Portuairk, only one of several in the area where turquoise waters, warmed by the gulfstream, lap silver sands.
The journey into this spectacular landscape, formed by volcanic activity about 60 million years ago, is a highly scenic one, and the peace and beauty you will find here make it eminently worthwhile. And even at the end of it, you are not too remote; the Sonachan Hotel is just half a mile away and Kilchoan is a lively community with a hotel, shop and community centre. A car ferry operates from there across to Tobermory on Mull, so you can even do a bit of island hopping if the mood takes you.
Bed linen and towels are included. Electricity and logs are included from May-September inclusive otherwise £20 supplement payable. One well-behaved pet welcome by arrangement. Sorry, no smoking in the cottage.
