Sutherland

Sleeping 2(3)

Riverside Cottage has a wonderful location tucked away in the valley of the Evelix, just four miles from the beautiful little Highland resort of Dornoch in Sutherland. It stands high with fine views over the river and the surrounding countryside.

The house itself is as charming as its surroundings. A traditional wee whitewashed Highland croft, in its own enclosed garden, inside it is comfortably appointed with an open fire in the open plan living area, a well-fitted kitchen area, bathroom and double bedroom downstairs. A steep open-tread staircase leads up from the double bedroom to a second lounge with single sofa bed. The ceiling up there is steeply coombed, so it might not be suitable for an adult, but an older child will find it a marvellous den.

Cottage

Dornoch is, quite understandably, something of a tourist honeypot. Really just a large village, it earns its town if not city status by virtue of having the northernmost cathedral in mainland Scotland. In addition it has a legendary links championship golf course and fabulous sandy beaches which go on for miles. It also has several very good eating places and a selection of small shops. Something, then, for all the family to enjoy.

There is good walking in the hills behind the cottage - the nearest is Beinn Donuill, and plenty of salmon and trout fishing in the nearby rivers and lochs. Nature lovers will find an abundance of wildlife, while whisky buffs will be pleased to know that they are almost equidistant from the Glenmorangie distillery to the south and the Brora distillery to the north, both within a half-hour drive. At Golspie, there is more golf and also some excellent mountain biking trails.

Rear of Cottage

Just to the north of Golspie is turreted Dunrobin Castle, well known from a million calendars, where there is a museum, gardens, falconry displays and frequent events. Within a couple of hours you can be at John O'Groats, and from just along the coast at Gill's Bay you can take a short ferry hop to St Margaret's Hope on Orkney, if a day on the islands appeals. To the south, Inverness, the Black Isle, Loch Ness and the lovely glens of Affric and Cannich (look out for kites and eagles) are well worth discovering.

Bed linen, towels, and the first £15 of electricity are all included!included in the rental. Heating is by electric oil radiators and open fire. Sorry, no pets and smoking is not permitted within the cottage.
