St Machar Cottage

St Machar Cottage
Fort Augustus
Inverness-shire
Scotland

Sleeping 6

The Highland village of Fort Augustus, with its ancient Abbey, its spectacular locks where Loch Ness funnels into the Caledonian Canal, and its enviable situation in the Great Glen has long been a favourite with visitors to Scotland. St Machar is a delightful and most comfortable, spacious holiday cottage occupying a secluded location in the village, at the end of a cul de sac and almost overlooking the Abbey. It stands in its own large, enclosed and beautifully tended garden, which has extensive lawns, a secluded patio area with furniture and gas barbecue. There is off road parking for three cars.

The cottage is light and bright, and kept warm all year round by oil-fired central heating and a wood burning stove in the sitting room.

Outside

You could hardly be more conveniently placed for local amenities. It is just a short stroll to the popular pubs, restaurants and local shops which line both banks of the canal, where you can wile away many a pleasant hour over lunch or an evening drink, watching the boats pass through the locks. From the swing bridge outside the Clansman Centre, monster enthusiasts can take a boat trip on the famous Loch Ness and keep an eye out for the elusive "Nessie". If you are looking for something more energetic, then there is plenty of good hill and forest walking in the immediate area, or you can walk or cycle the Great Glen Way. For the thrill seekers, try out the white water rafting at South Laggan! There is riding at Drumnadrochit (19m) and the award winning Loch Ness Visitor Centre, Urquhart Castle on the lochside is another popular tourist destination.

Garden

As you head up the loch, you have the chance to branch off at Invermoriston and follow the fast road through the most breathtaking scenery across to the west coast and Skye. By continuing along the loch however you will quickly reach Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, an attractive and vibrant city with excellent cultural and shopping facilities. By the Kessock Bridge there you can very often see pods of dolphins playing in the water below. From Inverness you can continue north to the Black Isle (look out for the red Kites by the Tore roundabout) and Sutherland. The beautiful glens of Glen Affric and Glen Cannich also await your visit.
