St Machar Cottage

St Machar Cottage
Fort Augustus
Inverness-shire
Scotland

Sleeping 6

Only a few minutes' walk from the friendly Highland village of Fort Augustus in Scotland's incomparable Great Glen and at the end of Loch Ness, St Machar offers superb comfort and is an ideal, secluded and tranquil hideaway. It stands in its own large, enclosed and well-tended garden at the end of a cul de sac, almost overlooking the famous former Abbey. There is off-road parking for three cars, extensive lawns and a private patio area with furniture and gas barbecue.

The cottage is light and bright, and kept warm all year round by oil-fired central heating and a romantic, wood burning stove in the sitting room.  Based at St Machar, you could hardly be more conveniently placed for local amenities.  It is just a short stroll to the popular pubs, restaurants and local shops which line both banks of the canal. Take your time over lunch or an evening drink, watching the boats pass through the locks.

Outside

From the swing bridge outside the Clansman Centre, monster enthusiasts can take a boat trip on the famous Loch Ness and keep an eye out for the elusive "Nessie" while the award winning Loch Ness Visitor Centre at Urquhart Castle on the lochside, is another popular tourist destination.  If you are looking for something more energetic, then there is plenty of good hill and forest walking in the immediate area, or you can walk or cycle the Great Glen Way.  For thrill seekers, try out the white water rafting at South Laggan! There is riding at Drumnadrochit (19m).

For trips out, head up the loch and branch off at Invermoriston and follow the fast road through the most breathtaking scenery across to the west coast and Skye. Or continue along the loch to quickly reach Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, an attractive and vibrant city with excellent cultural and shopping facilities. By the Kessock Bridge there you can very often see pods of dolphins playing in the water below.

From Inverness you can continue north to the Black Isle (look out for the red kites by the Tore roundabout) and Sutherland. The beautiful glens of Glen Affric and Glen Cannich also await your visit.

Bed linen, towels, oil-CH and electricity are included!included in the rental.  Well behaved pets are welcome by arrangement and smoking is not permitted within the cottage.
