The Gables
near Kilberry

Sleeping 2

The Gables is a delightful little cottage which originally formed part of a farm outbuilding. It is situated just off the single track road (with passing places) running between Tarbert (11m) and Lochgilphead (20m), a stunningly beautiful drive on the west coast of the Mull of Kintyre. The house stands in a sheltered garden with patio.

The thick stone walls belie the meticulous renovation which has been carried out inside to create an 'upside-down' living space. Downstairs, there is a double bedroom with en suite shower while upstairs you find an open-plan living area, warm and double-glazed with a cast iron log-effect fire.

It's only a short stroll from the Gables to the nearest sandy beach and the walking in this area is very good. From the coast you can enjoy superb views across to the islands of Islay, Jura and Gigha. You will also become accustomed to the sight of seals sunning themselves on the rocks beside the shore. Birdwatchers will not be disappointed as there is much for them to see. Golfers are catered for at Lochgilphead and Tarbert.

Garden enthusiasts will be delighted at the choice: the Achamore Gardens on Gigha or the gardens at Jura House on Jura are both only a day trip away and further up the coast there are the National Trust Gardens at Crarae and the Arduaine Gardens. All these gardens are of international renown. For a more ambitious excursion take the ferry from Tarbert or Claonaig (22m) to visit the lovely island of Arran.

For those of a historical or archaeological bent, Kilmartin Glen is a must with its stone circles and cairns dating back over 3,000 years. You might also enjoy a visit to Inveraray to view its Castle, the seat of Clan Campbell, and its jail museum.

In Kilberry there is an award-winning inn serving excellent meals (open April-October). Tarbert is your nearest centre for shopping and while there why not sample the region's famous seafood in one of its very good restaurants?
