Tobar Cottage
Near Strontian
Ardnamurchan
Sleeping 8
Tobar means 'Well' - of the H2O kind - in Gaelic, but you will also find yourself extremely 'well' accommodated at this lovely new detached house, beautifully situated some 2 miles from the village of Strontian on the lovely Ardnamurchan peninsula in western Scotland. It stands just off the main (everything is relative!) single track, dead end road to Polloch. There are only four houses beyond Tobar on this side road and after that it becomes a rough track, ideal for walking or mountain biking. To the front and side of the house there are fantastic views over the surrounding hills.
Inside, the house is spacious and beautifully appointed. There is a large lounge, a dining room and an additional conservatory with wonderful picture windows; there is a well fitted modern kitchen, a double bedroom and shower room and upstairs, a double bedroom and two twin bedrooms and another bathroom.
The nearest point of civilization is the charming village of Strontian (after which the element was named when it was discovered there in 1722). It stretches along the shore of Loch Sunart, has a small supermarket, excellent bistro and craft shop, and there are also several hotels and pubs. One of these is within walking distance of the cottage and is a great place for an evening meal.
The surrounding countryside is quite breathtakingly lovely. Continuing westward along the shores of Loch Sunart, you can either go right to the point of Ardnamurchan, the westernmost point of mainland Britain, with its Stevenson lighthouse and lovely sands at Sanna Bay, or bear right towards Lochailort and Mallaig, where you can take the ferry across to Skye. On the way you will pass the silver sands of Arisaig and Morar, and the excellent golf course at Traigh. From Strontian, too, you can take the road down to the little ferry to Mull at Lochaline (no booking necessary). Day trips to the islands should therefore be very much on the agenda for visitors.
For activities, there is unlimited walking in the Sunart hills, notably Ben Resipole, you can sail on the loch, fishing can also be arranged, and lovers of birds and other wildlife will have plenty of opportunity to indulge their passion.
Oil central heating, electricity, bed linen and towels are all
included in the rental. Sorry, pets are not accepted and smoking is not permitted in the house.
