Traquair Cottage is a traditional semi-detached cottage set right in the centre of the Scottish Borders, just off the B7062, 4 miles from Innerleithen and close to the well-known mountain biking centre at Glentress. Surrounded by peaceful countryside, the cottage has a mature garden (furniture) and visitors have the possibility of interesting hill and forest walks straight from the door. Inside, it is comfortably and simply furnished, kept cosy by night storage heaters and an open fire in the sitting room. The kitchen is compact and modern, there is a downstairs bathroom and upstairs there is a double bedroom and a twin. The cottage is ideal holiday accommodation for a family or group of friends wishing to cycle, walk, ride or just relax together in beautiful surroundings. Any mountain bikes or other sports equipment brought by visitors can be securely stored here.
Innerleithen is the closest village and there you will find shops, pubs and a hotel. Also close by is Traquair House which is said to be the oldest continuously inhabited house in Scotland, where the famous Bear Gates will remain closed until a Stuart king is restored to the British throne. The house itself is well worth a visit and it also plays host to a variety of different events during the year. It even has its own brewery! A visit there will almost certainly appeal to every member of the family. Traquair lies on the Southern Upland Way and enthusiastic walkers will be able to head out in either direction from there.
Peebles (6m) is a delightful little town with supermarkets for serious shopping as well as a fine choice of smaller shops, a leisure centre and some good places to eat. Golfers will find a course at the MacDonald Hotel at Cardrona, only a couple of miles from the cottage, while Innerleithen and Peebles also have golf courses. The River Tweed, although primarily famous as one of Scotland’s best fishing rivers, has some sections in this area which are excellent for canoeing. If you feel the call of the city, Edinburgh is less than an hour away by car or you can take the bus from Innerleithen/Peebles. You might even wish to include, on the way, a visit to Rosslyn Chapel, of Da Vinci Code fame. With so much to do, and the many stately homes, castles and ruined abbeys to visit, you will not have time to be bored at Traquair Cottage.
Electricity and logs are included and bed linen and towels may be hired. One well-behaved pet is welcome by arrangement. Smoking is not permitted within the cottage.
