Bothy at Troston
South West Scotland
The Bothy at Troston is a delightful and original conversion of an old stone bothy situated just 7 miles from Dumfries to the north and Southerness sands on the Solway Firth to the south. Part of a 360 acre estate and accessed by a quiet country lane the house is set high on a hill and enjoys superb views over the surrounding landscape. On a clear day, from the summit, you can even see right across the Solway to the Lake District.
Outside the house there is a terrace (with furniture) and plenty of parking space. Inside, all is open plan with a well-fitted kitchen area, dining area and a sitting area with a wood burning stove. The beds in the double bedroom are zip-linked for versatility.
This corner of Scotland is easy to reach and has much of interest for the discerning visitor, being particularly rich in history: Robert the Bruce began his long battle for Scottish freedom in this region; Robert Burns worked for his hard-earned living as an excise-man around this coast and John Paul Jones, one of the founding fathers of the US Navy was born at nearby Kirkbean. Lovely Sweetheart Abbey stands in the little village of New Abbey (2miles, shop, pubs) and on the opposite side of the Nith estuary is Caerlaverock Castle, the 'castle of the lark'. On the far side of Castle Douglas are the National Trust Castle and Gardens at Threave (25 miles).
Here, the countryside is ideal for walkers. On the Estate itself there are some excellent way-marked forest trails or you can join the Southern Upland Way, 25 miles away at St Johns Town of Dalry. This route runs right through the Galloway Forest Park which caters for cyclists as well. Golfers will find courses at Southerness, Dumfries and Castle Douglas and there are opportunities for fishing, sailing, bird-watching and riding - the list of activities is endless.
