Tweed Green Cottage
Peebles
South of Edinburgh
Scotland
Sleeping 4
The pretty town of Peebles (all facilities), 25 miles or so south of Edinburgh, stands beside the River Tweed among the green Border hills. In a lovely position, on the quiet road which runs along the river yet just a couple of minutes walk from the town centre, Tweed Green is a comfortable, newly refurbished semi detached cottage which looks out on the riverside.
Inside, it is surprisingly spacious, with a very well appointed kitchen diner, a cosy sitting room, and, Upstairs, two bedrooms, one with en suite shower. To the rear, there is a very pleasant suntrap terrace (furniture) in a little rock garden.
Peebles has been making quite a name for itself due to its proximity to Glentress, now one of the foremost mountain biking centres in Europe. (The cottage can provide secure storage for cycles.) Because of its lovely situation and pleasant ambience, however, the town has long been a popular holiday destination. There are plenty of excellent eating places and good individual shops within easy walking distance of the cottage, while the Gytes Leisure Centre with swimming pool etc. is just on the other side of the bridge. There is riding at the Hydro, tennis courts and a golf course, one of several in the surrounding area. And of course, there are ample opportunities for fishing either in the Tweed itself or in the lochs round about. Walkers, too, will find plenty of opportunities, whether on the Southern Upland Way, which passes through nearby Traquair (7m) or in the surrounding hills and forests.
Garden enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to Kailzie Gardens and Dawyck, both under 10 miles distant. Historic Neidpath Castle, in a dramatic setting above the river just outside the town, and Traquair House (7m) should not be missed, while a pleasant day may be spent trundling round the other small Border towns, many of which have factory outlets for the woollen and cashmere garments for which the region is famous.
Edinburgh is 40 minutes away by car, or why not just take one of the frequent buses? The cottage is one of the few that are easily accessible by public transport. (Just off the road between Peebles and Edinburgh is Roslin Chapel, its fame increased by its leading role in The Da Vinci Code.)
Heating by gas central heating, electricity, bed linen and towels are all
included. Sorry, no pets, and smoking is not permitted in the cottage.
