Can you imagine finding a beautiful house within a 30-minute drive of Edinburgh but set deep in the countryside without another house in sight? It certainly sounds unbelievable but that's what you get at Wakefield House, a most sought-after holiday home. This elegant country house is situated about 2 miles (a brisk walk for the energetic) from the delightful conservation village of West Linton (shops, pubs, restaurants). Standing in its own extensive garden in the middle of a large country estate, it enjoys splendid views over the valley to the distant hills. To complete the idyll a small stream tumbles down the slope at the side of the house.

Inside, light and space are complemented by style and comfort. In the newly fitted kitchen a door opens on to a terrace (furniture) where you can breakfast al fresco. Also on the ground floor are two attractive sitting rooms, one with a wood burner, the second with an open fire, a single bedroom and a bath/shower room. There is a mezzanine floor transformed into a superb dining area with a door leading out to a pretty balcony set out with a small table and chairs, just the place for a pre-dinner drink. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms, a twin and a bathroom, with bath and separate shower.

Starting at the front door you can enjoy very pleasant walks either in the hills or along the river banks while the quiet country road at the end of the drive leads only to a reservoir. For those interested it may be possible to organise shooting and fishing in season on the estate. The West Linton golf course is only a mile from the house and a 20-minute drive will bring you to the Edinburgh dry ski slope.

If you choose to explore Scotland's elegant capital city then why not avoid traffic and parking problems by taking one of the buses which pass regularly through West Linton. On the way Rosslyn Chapel is well worth a detour - it was famous long before the Da Vinci Code made it a star attraction.

Heading south there is the beautiful Scottish Border countryside to visit. This area is wonderful for walking, it has world-class mountain biking, riding and the chance to discover a wealth of old Scottish castles, keeps and ruined abbeys. Not to be missed further west is The World Heritage Site at New Lanark, as well as the stunning Falls of Clyde. Once there, you are close to Glasgow, always an interesting day trip.

Heating is by oil CH (included!included), open fire and woodburner. Bed linen, towels and electricity are included!included. Up to two well behaved pets are welcome by arrangement. Sorry, no smoking in the house. A householder's deposit is required for this property. Wi-Fi is available, subject to provider.
