Facing south just a 100 yards down from St Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile (the oldest street in Edinburgh which connects Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyrood House) is Flat 1 at Number 227. This flat (apartment) is in the very centre of old Edinburgh where people have lived since ancient Celtic times. Though the façade was built in 1795 the core of the building dates from the 1500's.

Lorraine and Charles Stewart live in the Borders and have this flat as their family holiday home. They have completely renovated it, preserving its old internal layout but thoroughly modernising it, creating a charming and comfortable flat just one floor above street level.

Bedrooms are at the back away from the street, but at the front there are three windows with bench seats from which you can enjoy the life of the Royal Mile. All around there are cafés, pubs and restaurants, and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Office is right across the street. During the Festival this part of the street is closed to traffic; pipers play, jugglers and fire eaters dance, and musicians and street actors draw crowds of adults and children.

The Stewarts also have four other apartments nearby, 35 Cockburn Street and 6 St Giles Street, 87a West Bow and 112 West Bow. The map at the bottom of the page locates them all.

Single bed, and a pull-out bed underneath and so can be set up as a twin room

Two full size bunk beds (more suited for children). Its window opens onto the drawing room.

*All three bedrooms are at the back of the building which is quieter.

Electric hob/oven, fridge/freezer, washer/dryer, dishwasher and microwave oven. There is also a gas central heating boiler.
In addition there is a hall area which has a breakfast table and chairs, and an alcove with a desk and pay-phone.

This overlooks the Royal Mile with three windows all with built in seating affording an excellent view of the many activities taking place in the street below (as the small plan below shows).
The two sofas are covered with Black Watch tartan and one of them converts into a double bed for extra guests. Fireplace is electric coal-effect. There's also a Television with VCR and a CD player.

The dining table accommodates 6 people.

  • All towels and bed linen are included with the flat and there is no extra charge for heating, hot water or electricity.
  • There are ironing facilities, hairdryer and electric shaver points in the bathrooms.
  • An arrival pack of essential groceries are included.
  • Access to the flat is directly off the Royal Mile through a communal stair with an entryphone.
  • No smoking in the apartment, and no pets please.
  • The flat is located in the centre of Edinburgh's busy tourist area and there can be a certain amount of street noise in the evenings particularly in front of the property.
