The house, part of a late Classical terrace built in 1825, looks across The Meadows to Edinburgh University. It is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the University and the same again to the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle.
The Meadows, now a leafy park, was formally the Burgh Muir or Loch south of the Old Town of Edinburgh, and one of the principal water supplies for the town. In 1722 it was drained and laid out as an ornamental park.
