Pittenweem, on the coast in the East Neuk of Fife (neuk means corner), is about 15 miles from St Andrews and about an hour's drive north of Edinburgh. Pittenweem harbour It is a small traditional fishing village with a working harbour (you can buy fresh fish!), a maze of narrow streets or wynds and vernacular architecture with influences from across the North Sea: crow-stepped gables and red tile roofs.

Pittenweem church Quill Cottage is Sarah and Laurence Scott's family holiday home which is available for weekly rental on a self catering basis. It is a 3 minute walk to the harbour and close to the shops: post office, newsagent, butcher, baker, small supermarket, fish merchants and art galleries, craft shops, antique shops and places to drink and eat out.

Also in the village - which really is picturesque - you can find the sea captian's house (1626), two hundred year old houses restored by the National Trust for Scotland, and the church dating from the 13th century when it was part of the Augustinian Priory of Pittenweem. The name Pittenweem actually means "place of the cave", and you can also visit the sea-side cave of St Fillan, 7th century monk and disciple of St Columba. The Royal Burgh of Pittenweem Arts Festival is usually during the 2nd week of August.

What to do around about

The Fife coastline is a very special environment for wild-life and also all along the coast are reminders of Scotland's history and pre-history.

The Fife Coastal Path extends 78 miles - starting in North Queensbury, Edinburgh at the Forth Bridges and finishing just beyond the Tay Bridge. The Fife Path is easily accessible by car or public transport - so circular walks are easy to do. For example the walk from Pittenweem to Crail is approximately 8 miles (13 km) or Pittenweem to Elie through St Monans is appromimately 6 miles (10 km).

Recommended: a day visiting the Isle of May (5 miles off the coast of Fife, a little to the east in the map below) which is home to the largest grey seal breeding colony on the east coast of Britain, as well as to thousands of seabirds including vast numbers of puffins. It is a National Nature Reserve managed by Scottish Natural Heritage.
