Garden and moorland

On the edge of the moors 1000ft above Loch Ness and 3 miles along a small no-through road is the small croft house now called the Cottage in the Garden. It has its own private entrance and is completely secluded in the gardens of Tigh Nan Uiseagan "place of the skylarks", which is where owners Edwin and Suzie Mickleburgh and their family live.

The cottage is surrounded by its own lawn and has a self-contained orchard at the back. One of the great attractions of staying here is that you are welcome to wander and relax in the series of wonderful enclosed gardens which the Mickleburghs have made, all interconnecting, and each with a different atmosphere. There are pine woods, ponds surrounded by pasture and open moorland, a Japanese garden, a meditation garden, high hedges and borders and surprises around every corner. (See The Garden, a separate page with photographs taken in June) The view from the top of the ground is particularly magnificent on a clear day (... and when I visited in June the air was full of the sound of skylarks - editor).

The Cottage in the Garden is central and convenient for exploring the North and Highlands of Scotland, in all seasons of the year, ski-ing, fishing, sailing, climbing, walking all around, and all the while there is possibility of glimpsing deer, eagles, buzzards, foxes, badgers, black grouse, hen harriers - even wildcats. Guides and brochures are available, and Suzie and Edwin are very happy to provide any more advice from their first-hand experience and knowledge about the area.

Accommodation:

The interior is a beautiful light and open space. There's a glass-fronted wood-burning stove (and extra convector heaters), and a large comfortable sofa. Satellite LCD TV/DVD and CD player. Both the front door and French windows open directly on to the garden where there are tables and chairs, a barbecue and hammock strung between two trees.

Extracts from visitors' letters:

"We didn't want to leave for at least a couple of months. The gorgeous smell of the gorse, the birds singing, what else do you want. We enjoyed Capercaillie, the Summer Isles, Inverewe and Abriachan Gardens, Glen Affric, Glen Coilte. And we read our books as well. All the best and hope to meet you again."
Joop and Thea.

"Thank you for the Cottage in the Garden. It exceeded all our expectations totally. It is beautiful. What more can one say about this magical environment with its brooding mountains, truly astonishing views. We were really happy here for the week's holiday, and we will be back again and again to replenish our spirits."
Lisa and Edward.
