Scaurbridge House, a classically proportioned, beautifully furnished and decorated former manse dating from 1840, is the home of Elizabeth Ann Hughes who welcomes guests to stay for bed and breakfast, and optional dinner.

It is situated in a lovely garden on the edge of the village of Penpont in Upper Nithsdale, between Thornhill and Moniaive, a rural area of woodland, hills and farmland.

Sitting room

Breakfast, and optional Dinner:

For breakfast, in the Dining Room (right) Elizabeth Ann offers a splendid full cooked Scottish breakfast (such as locally smoked trout with creamy scrambled eggs from very spoilt chickens!) and a wide choice of fruit, porridge, cereals, yoghurt, breads, toast tea/coffee and herb teas. Plus a little sweetmeat- usually hot scones fresh from the oven served with home made jams and jellies. Special dietary requirements can be catered for - preferably with advance notice.

Elizabeth Ann also offers Dinner. She specializes in delicious home cooking using top quality local produce in season. Galloway beef and lamb, local game, cheeses and honey, fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs from the garden when available. Here is an example of a Dinner menu:

Guests are welcome to bring their own drinks to serve with meals.

Tariff:

£35 per person per night based on two people sharing a room and including breakfast.
£45 for a single person per night including breakfast.
Dinner, by prior arrangement, starts at £25.

Scaurbridge House is 5 miles from Drumlanrig Castle (right), open May to August, a late 17th C. Scottish chateau with extensive grounds and parterres laid out in the 1720's. It is the principal home of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and has some wonderful paintings.
