For more than 2,000 years the people of St Kilda remained remote from the world. Its society was viable, even utopian; but in the 19th century the island was discovered by missionaries, do-gooders and tourists, who brought money, disease and despotism. St Kilda culture gradually disintegrated and in 1930 the few remaining islanders asked to be evacuated.

Island on the Edge of the World was Charles Maclean's first book, winning for its author a Scottish Arts council New Writer's Award. Since appearing in 1972, it has become a classic work of social history and has never been out of print.

This book has good solid scholarly content and is so well laid-out, colourful and easy to read with plenty of illustrations and photographs, it would make a perfect gift for anyone from age 10 upwards. That is to say, this is a book to get any young person interested in their Scottish ancestry, and yet will still be a resource for those who think they know quite a lot already.
