Romantic Scotland (Country Series)
by Charles MacLean, Fritz Von Der Schulenburg (Photographer)
This is a book of full of varied and sumptuous romantic photographs of Scotland.
Charles Maclean's 14 page introduction is an inciteful and scholarly essay on the way in which Romanticism became attached to Scotland; something that only happened within the last 250 years. He discusses how Romanticism quickly became established and flourished as tradition affecting both culture within Scotland, and the perception of this small country worldwide.
Fritz Von Der Schulenburg's inspiring and lavish photographs (nearly 300 of them) are each accompanied by the author's lively anecdotal commentary.

St Kilda : Island on the Edge of the World
by Charles MacLean
For more than 2,000 years the people of St Kilda remained remote from the world. Its society was viable, even utopian; but in the 19th century the island was discovered by missionaries, do-gooders and tourists, who brought money, disease and despotism. St Kilda culture gradually disintegrated and in 1930 the few remaining islanders asked to be evacuated.
Island on the Edge of the World was Charles Maclean's first book, winning for its author a Scottish Arts council New Writer's Award. Since appearing in 1972, it has become a classic work of social history and has never been out of print.
"A facinating book... Charles Maclean is an excellent writer... he describes the story of St. Kilda with powerful compassion." Magnus Magnusson

Scottish Country
by Charles Maclean, Christopher Simon Sykes
"Scotland," writes Charles Maclean, "is a spectacularly beautiful place. And Scots throughout their turbulent history have lived in harmony with an environment that offered mostly hardship, yet inspired fierce loyalty and a passionate love of country"
Scottish Country explores the union of the Scots with the great beauty of their land, as manifested by Scotland's secluded country houses, its gardens, traditions and culture, revealing an authentic and highly diverse Scottish style.
With nearly 400 colour illustrations a full range of Scottish homes is shown here each with its own chapter. There are also chapters on painted ceilings, Harris tweed, tartans, pottery, doocots, trout and salmon fishing, deerstalking and grouse shooting.
"Beautiful... scholarly and poetic text full of colourful historical anecdote." World of Interiors

The Silence
by Charles MacLean
A beautiful woman, damaged by her past, Karen is in thrall to her rich, controlling husband. Yet part of her dreams of escape - with her lover and mute four-year-old son, upon whose silence their safety depends. One sweltering August week on Long Island the boy finds his voice, and Karen's careful plans begin to unravel. As she is drawn ever deeper into a nightmare of deception, and betrayal, menace explodes into savage blood-chilling violence...
A compelling psychological thriller with an erotic edge to it. Maclean draws us into a world where the characters only find out about themselves at extreme moments and into a plot which keeps us in suspense until the very last line. Definitely an absorbing read.

Highlanders : A History of the Scottish Clans
by Fitzroy MacLean
Traces the history of Highland Clans from "Origins", the time of Robert the Bruce through to "The Irish Connection", and "After Culloden" (1745).
This book has good solid scholarly content and is so well laid-out, colourful and easy to read with plenty of illustrations and photographs, it would make a perfect gift for anyone from age 10 upwards. That is to say, this is a book to get any young person interested in their Scottish ancestry, and yet will still be a resource for those who think they know quite a lot already.
