About the farm:
Eaglescairnie Mains was launched as the Lothians' FWAG (Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group) Demonstration Farm in October 1992. It sets out to unite wildlife and landscape conservation with profitable agriculture and in 1993 was runner up in the nationally acclaimed silver Lapwing award for Farming and Conservation. The farm is a valuable resource for local farmers, students, school parties and interested groups where they can see at first hand the benefits, opportunities and practicalities of integrating farming and conservation.
Michael emphasises that this is a working family farm and that it has the same limitations as any other of a similar size and location. The primary aim of Eaglescairnie Mains is to maintain a profitable farm business, and the enhancement of landscape, habitat and wildlife are integral parts of this business. This may be termed "sympathetic" farming - an attempt to fit modern farming comfortably into the existing landscape.
